Choosing a Washing Machine

End your laundry drama with these tips and offers

Tucked away in the laundry, it can be easy to forget about the humble washing machine–until it’s not working when you need it, and you’re stuck forking out cash for the laundromat.

How do you know if you need to replace your machine before you’re stuck without it? Washers, generally speaking, need to be replaced every 6-8 years. If yours is nearing the end of its life, you might notice it making more noise than it used to, leaking water, moving while in use, stopping mid-cycle, or not rinsing detergent off properly.

When it comes to choosing a new washing machine, there are a range of machines available, so it’s worth putting some thought into what will work best for you and your household.

Here are RT Edwards top tips for choosing your washing machine:

1. Think about you and your family

Household appliances should make life easier for you and your household. Washing machine capacity is rated in kilograms, and as a rule of thumb, a small family of two need about a 4-5kg washer, and a large family of four or five needs 7kg or more.

Washing Machine Capacity

Capacity's not your only choice – there are many other features to consider.

  Child Lock Feature
  • Do you have young children in the house? A child lock might be a good idea.
  Front Loader Washing Machine Rental
  • Do you have any concerns about mobility, strength or back pain? A front-loader might be better for you than a top-loader.
  Add Clothes During Wash Feature
  • Do you always find a bit of laundry dropped on the way to the machine? A washer that lets you add forgotten items during the cycle might be just the thing.

2. Look at your laundry

Once you know what features are ideal for your family, head to the laundry and see what space is available. The physical size of the units can differ a lot depending on brand and design.

Will you have room to open the door or lid, load and unload the machine, move around and use other things in the laundry? If you have a smaller laundry, you could opt for a front-loader and a wall-mounted dryer, or a combination washer/dryer.

You’ll also need to consider the available connections – does your laundry have hot and cold taps, or just cold? Make sure your chosen machine matches up.

3. Consider the environmental impact & running costs

When shopping for washers, it’s important to check for both water and power efficiency as this will save you money in the long run. As a general rule, front-loaders will use less of both, but may cost more to buy.

Check out this article on how environmentally-friendly washers can help reduce your impact, and save you money on your power and water bills.

If you’re shopping online, you should be able to find information about water and power consumption in the product specifications. And make sure you check out whether there are any energy efficient rebates available to claim.

4. Work out your budget

Figure out what you can afford to spend and get the best unit you can for your budget.

For important home appliances that will be used regularly, buying the cheapest unit you can find can be counterproductive. Cheaper units can be inefficient in terms of both space and the impact on your bills, as well as having shorter warranties. Choosing something that’ll last longer and has a better warranty can save you replacing the whole machine again in a few years’ time.

5. Choose a retailer that offers you more

The ticket price of the item is not the only thing to look at. To make sure you get the most value for money possible, look for retailers who have price match guarantees, and offer extras like delivery and installation. Services like these can help you get the same machine for the same great price, but with added benefits, giving you more value for each dollar you spend. It can also pay to check what your retailer will offer you in the long run. When you rent with RT Edwards, we’ll help you out in the unfortunate event of a breakdown, theft or fire. Learn more here.
